HARRISONBURG, Va.---Virginia State Sen. Mark Obenshain won the Republican nomination to be Virginia's Attorney General on Saturday.

Obenshain said his campaign will focus on keeping communities safe and pushing back overreach of federal government.

His wife, Suzanne, said she had been waiting for this moment since she married him 26 years ago.

"Mark and I have attended every Republican convention since 1981. To be there as an actual candidate and candidate's wife and having our family surrounded us was so exciting," said Suzanne.

Obenshain said he is proud to be one of the first candidates to represent the Shenandoah Valley statewide.

"I'm delighted to be a nominee on a statewide ticket from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I think we have an opportunity to take our mainstream values to Richmond and the commonwealth of Virginia," said Obenshain.

He said he won against Del. Rob Bell (R-58) with 55 percent of the vote.

"It was a hard fought race. I had an opponent that was one of the hardest-working campaigners I have ever met in my life," said Obenshain.

In a statement, Bell accepts the defeat and offers support for Obenshain's campaign.

"I wholeheartedly congratulate Mark Obenshain and unreservedly endorse him as Virginia's next Republican attorney general. We have worked together in the past, and I consider mark a friend. I am so grateful to my family, volunteers, campaign team and supporters for all their extraordinary efforts for my campaign," according to a statement from Bell.

For the Obenshains, the campaigning has already started.

We're just excited and we're going to take that enthusiasm now on the road and build on that so we know we have a solid victory in November," said Suzanne.

Senator Obenshain said he will visit several cities to spread his message, even before the Democratic party elect his opponent.
