Organizers Get Ready For Tonight's Harrisonburg Holiday Parade

HARRISONBURG, Va.-- Organizers are anticipating around 6,000 will line the streets of downtown for Friday night's Holiday Parade. The parade starts at 7:00 p.m.

This year's theme is Rocktown Rockin' Holiday. Lynn Turner oversees the parade for the city. She says the basic outline of the parade is similar to years past, but there will be some surprises.

About 100 organizations will be marching. The parade does create some street closures. Starting at 5:00 p.m., Main St. from the intersections of Cantrell Ave. to Gay St. will be closed, along with Court Sq. The eastbound lanes of Cantrell Ave. from Main St. to High St., and the left lane of Liberty St. from Bruce St. to South Main St. will also be closed during the parade.

Turner hopes the parade puts everyone in a festive spirit. "I think it kind of kicks everything off. We have a tree lighting, and the band plays on Court Square afterwards. It's really nice down there afterwards. It's a way to start the season, and it's a good way for everyone to get together," she said.

WHSV has received a lot of questions and comments about whether the parade is called the Holiday Parade or the Christmas Parade. It's the Holiday Parade, and has been that way for about 10 years.
