PAGE COUNTY, Va. -- Page County is moving forward with demolishing its county office building.

The county awarded the bid to Lasco Contractors for $54,000, $400 of which are for demolishing.

The Preserve Our School Foundation wants to save the building.

Mark Lauzier, the Page County administrator, has an impending deadline to respond to numerous Freedom of Information Act requests from people who are against the building being demolished.

The demolition process, which includes removing asbestos, will begin in three weeks.

Mark Lauzier said the building has been used for county offices since 1935.

After it's torn down, it will be made into a parking lot for the new county building.

The project will be completed by mid-January

Lauzier said county staff are happy to move to a building that's in better condition.

While others have gone to the Board of Supervisors several times, requesting that it be saved.

"That was the hard part, that the board of supervisors made a decision to go in the path of construction of the government center. The maintenance and the years and all that have taken a severe toll on it. There's a lot of leaks and a lot of other issues with it." said Lauzier.

On Monday, the Page County commissioner of revenue along with several other departments will be moving into the new county building, located right next to the old one.
