Paramedic Injured in Fall in Northern Virginia

Authorities say a paramedic has been seriously injured after falling from an overpass in northern Virginia while responding to a vehicle fire.

Dustin Sternbeck, an Arlington County spokesman, says fire departments were called to the overpass on Interstate 395 in Shirlington about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Virginia State Police say an Alexandria fire and EMS ambulance stopped in the northbound lanes of I-395 to reach the burning vehicle. Police say the paramedic fell off the roadway and into Four Mile Creek, about 20 feet below the interstate.

Sternbeck says CPR was performed on the paramedic, 33-year-old Joshua Weissman, at the scene. Weissman, of Bristow, is a seven-year veteran of the Alexandria Fire Department. He was in critical condition late Wednesday at Washington Hospital Center.
