Plans to Add Apartments to Historical Site

WAYNESBORO -- The Mill at South River was sold in December to a Richmond company for nearly $2 million.

It was formerly a plant used to make corduroy. After it closed in the 60s, the owner went through the process of cleaning the site and rezoning it.

The site is no longer used for just manufacturing. Now, it houses the Waynesboro Health Department, a tractor trailer lot and space used by artists.

The new owner plans to keep all those tenants and add some apartments on to the 40 acres The Mill occupies. It will end up being a rehabilitation project in the city.

“I'm not really sure what their total vision is, but certainly having residences is part of that. It's part of our vision too, to have more housing in the downtown area. It fits what we're trying to do, so I'm sure that's part of their vision as well,” said Waynesboro Director of Economic Development Greg Hitchin.

There are no immediate plans to develop the property, but the new owners are planning to look into historic tax credits for the future apartments.
