HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The U.S. Census Bureau reports that in Harrisonburg, 27 percent of people lived below the poverty line in 2011. If you compare that percentage to those receiving food assistance, the number is close to 10 percent.

The president of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, Frank Tamberrino, said in Harrisonburg you have to consider that many students are included in the poverty rate.

He said usually companies looking to move to the area, may look at poverty rates but they also may look at other figures like household income.

According to Tamberrino, he has not seen poverty rates impacting businesses or people moving to the area.

"If that trend goes up for 2 or 3 years then there may be something structurally behind that from an economic standpoint that community leaders have to sit down and look at but again, just a single number in it on itself. Should cause a whole lot of concern," said Tamberrino.

He said it is still important to keep an eye on what happens from an economic standpoint and factors that may influence poverty in the community.
