President Obama is making a stop in Virginia today to promote his plan for job training at community colleges.
He wants community colleges and businesses to partner together in the effort to train 2 million workers in high-growth industries like advanced manufacturing and transportation.
His $8 billion plan is called the "Community College to Career Fund" and its part of the budget he is planning to send to Congress.
Blue Ridge Community College President John Downey is excited about the plan and says his Weyers Cave campus is already partnering with area businesses to train workers.
Downey says Blue Ridge works with businesses to identify growing needs in the area.
Having a strong workforce training program is essential in getting businesses to locate or expand in the Shenandoah Valley.
"We work with a wide range of companies in the Valley and have recently developed several programs responding to emerging needs. One of the needs is biosciences, so we've developed a bio processing program," Downey commented.
President Obama's plan also institutes "pay for performance" in job training which would give financial incentives to ensure trainees find permanent jobs.
