HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Winter weather can put more stress on your car and your wallet.

Some mechanics have seen a 50 percent increase in business from last winter.

Tom Imeson, the owner of the Harrisonburg AAMCO, said his mechanics are doing more drive train and transmission checks this winter.

He said drivers stuck in snow could damage the transmission by spinning their tires trying to get out.

"If you feel a problem developing now or if it is time to do maintenance, you can either take care of it in the short term when it is lower cost or you can wait until something breaks and of course that is something very expensive," said Imeson.

He said a transmission overhaul on average in the U.S. can cost $2,800.
