Lawmakers in Washington are delaying a vote on raising the debt ceiling even though a deadline is fast approaching.
Republican leaders said Tuesday night that they will likely wait until Thursday to vote on their plan, instead of voting on Wednesday because the plan does not have enough savings yet.
Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito, from West Virginia, says she has not received this many calls about an issue since just after the 9/11 terror attacks.
She says the most popular topic is people asking if they will get Social Security checks and Medicare benefits. Capito says those benefits are not in danger.
"People are near tears on the phone," said Capito. "It's heartbreaking. I'm getting, 'Stop arguing, fix it, don't default,' then I'm getting 'Stand strong, don't give the President what he wants.' It's all over the board."
Capito says she is confident Congress will reach a deal on time.
