RICHMOND, Va. - In a letter from the Department of School Nutrition Services, Richmond Public Schools announced it will offer no-cost breakfast and lunch to students through a new program, Community Eligibility Provision.

"All students currently enrolled in any Richmond Public School is eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at no charge to you each day of the 2014-2015 school year," the letter reads.

Students will be able to participate in these programs with no costs or associated fees. Parents won't have to submit an application, either. A la carte snack items will still be offered for sale to students, according to the letter.

74.25% of the students in Richmond Public Schools were receiving free lunch as of October 2013, states the letter.

"CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) benefits students and the school nutrition department's bottom line--it increases participation in the school nutrition programs by offering breakfast and lunch for free to all; reduces administrative work for school districts by eliminating the need to qualify students for free and reduced-price meals and track which children areparticipatingg; and improving the overall financial viability of the school nutrition programs in high poverty schools," the letter reads.
