GREENVILLE, Va. (WHSV) -- UPDATE -- The Augusta County Sheriff's Department have released surveillance images of the BB&T bank robbery suspect.
GREENVILLE -- An armed robbery at BB&T Bank in Greenville happened just before 9:30 Thursday morning.
Investigators with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office said a man walked into the bank with a gun, demanded money, received money and then left the scene on foot.
Both Riverhead High School and Elementary School were placed on a partial lock down for about 20 minutes after the robbery.
Investigators pulled footage from the bank's surveillance camera and continued to search for the suspect. Who they describe as a 6-foot, African-American male in his 30s. They say he has a muscular, but slim build and at the time of the robbery was wearing a straw hat.
"My understanding is he was brandishing the firearm, demanded money, and money from the top drawer was given to him. Then he left on foot, last seen walking south on Route 11. We do believe he had a vehicle, most likely parked nearby and he got in the vehicle and left the scene," said Paul McCormic, an investigator with the sherrif's office.
The FBI, a canine unit and Virginia State Police were all on the scene earlier with the sheriff's office.
"We're collecting evidence, fingerprints, partial prints, possible DNA, shoe impressions. All these will be sent to the lab for analysis," said McCormick.
Investigators have begun looking into a possible connection to another crime.
"We are in touch with Nelson County. There seem to be some similarities to a bank robbery they had there," said McCormick.
According to the sheriff's office, the three employees inside the bank at the time of the robbery were shaken up, understandably, after today's robbery.
"It's never easy for anybody to be robbed at gunpoint. But they seem to be in good spirits," said McCormick.
