Should you be allowed to carry a concealed weapon on a college campus? And can guns keep you safe?

That's the hot debate going on right now among many James Madison University students.

A gun rights group held a rally on Thursday on JMU's campus. That rally has gotten a lot of students fired up about the issue.

Some students say people have the right to protect themselves with firearms. They say that right should extend to college campuses.

But other students say that may not be the best way to keep the campus safe.

"I just think it's kind of ridiculous that they think the way to protect us is to have more guns on campus," said Andrew Jones, a JMU student. "I think if no one has guns we'll be more safe than if we allow any firearms on our campus, and we have a very strong community anyway, I don't think adding guns to that mixture is going to help us at all."

There's no word as to whether or not JMU will allow concealed firearms on campus in the near future.

So Jones thinks only bad guys should have guns on campus.

I see you are biased when it comes to posting comments. All I said was I feel safer knowing I can carry a gun to defend myself and family. Criminals aren't going to obey laws.

Criminals do not care about gun laws or any laws. I would feel safer if I knew I had something to keep me safe. When seconds matter, police are minutes away.
