"Small Business" Saturday has come to a close here in the Valley, and many local stores are happy not just with that result. But Black Friday went just as well for many of them.

Counting lots of change at the end of the day is a good sign for David Burns, co-owner of "The Sole Source" shoe store in Harrisonburg.
Not only did they have lots of customers for "Small Business" Saturday.. but for Black Friday as well.

"Usually Black Friday isn't a big deal for us. We're not a big box store. But we we had a lot of people come out yesterday," Burns says.

Colby Trow, who co-owns Mossy Creek Fly Fishing with his brother Brian, was also pleasantly surprised.

"Typically in the past, these two days haven't been the best. Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Just because everyone is out at the bigger deals and the bigger stores," Trow says.

So what's changed?

Trow says getting word out through different ways about the importance of small businesses has really helped.

"Social media outlets, and our email campaigns. And our website. Word of mouth around town, and handing out fliers," Trow says.

David's store had a similar campaign, but he's also thankful for his regular customers.

"Small businesses definitely have it tough out there. We're lucky that we just have set of awesome customers that support us all year long," Burns says.

He also hopes that maybe this is a sign that the economy may be turning the corner or that the message of supporting local businesses is getting through to shoppers.

"I was surprised that today was so good. Whenever you have a day as good as yesterday, you're going to pay for that usually with a slow one. But the last few days have been great in here," Burns says.
