HARRISONBURG, Va. -- A representative for the Harrisonburg Fire Department said kitchen fires can double on days like Thanksgiving when there is a lot of cooking. That was why he recommended families get a Safe Top Fire-Stop devices to keep over their stove.

When a flame hits the wick on the device, a dry powder is released to put out and contain the fire before it spreads.

Deputy Chief Ian Bennett said so far they have saved eight homes from fires this year. He said he highly recommends getting them to prevent cooking fires.

"The typical cooking fire can get into the stove,” said Bennett. “It can get into the cabinets and the wall and the amount of damage it has done between flame damage and us having to tear the wall down to get to the fire is huge. This contains the fire to the stove, and at most you have a little fire to the stove."

Bennett said they have a grant program to give these fire stop devices to students, the elderly and low-income families for free.
