Augusta County Board of Supervisors voted against a noise ordinance in Augusta County neighborhoods.

The ordinance would have charged neighbors if their dogs barked for more than 10 minutes.

Nearly 10 people spoke before the board for and against the measure on Wednesday.

Deborah Cheezum is all for a noise ordinance for barking dogs.

"Barking dogs are a nuisance. I don't care what anybody says. There could be a reason and there couldn't be a reason," Cheezum said.

Cheezum said she doesn't agree with the board's decision.

"Well I'm very disappointed but I understand that is a very hard thing to deal with," Cheezum said.

Members of the board said they don't want to have laws that end up in arguments with neighbors.

The supervisors also don't think the ordinance would be easy to enforce.

John Geary who is against the measure said this would be one of his concerns.

"How can you prove which dog is barking and when is barking. It's just gonna be a he said she said situation," John Geary said.

He said he understands the neighbors being annoyed with barking dogs.

But he said people who live in the county need to understand there are not many noise ordinances like in the city.

"I'm willing to put up with that for the freedom of doing what I want and if that means having a barking dog so be it," Geary said.

But some neighbors like Mary Wood wanted the ordinance to apply in the country.

"We walk out the back door and the dogs bark," Wood said. "This goes on day and night. The neighbors never come out to quiet them."

Remonia Fisher said quieting dogs is not that easy when you have more than one.

" They will bark and it's late at night. Now i have three. How long is it gonna take me to round up three in a fenced in lot," Fisher said.

Neighbors supporting the measure said they want something to be done, even if this didn't pass.
