Supporters of the Greenway Bike Trail are getting ready to "pack the chamber," as they're calling it, at Tuesday night's Harrisonburg City Council meeting.
The only way Tom Benevento gets around town is on his bicycle. It's long been his dream to see a proper bike path in Harrisonburg.
He's working hard to see the proposed Northend Greenway become a reality.
Really this sort of system captures a larger percentage of the population that really wants to ride their bike or walk, but doesn't feel like it's safe on the main road," said Benevento on the Northend Greenway Committee.
Supporters of the Greenway wanted to pack City Council Chambers Tuesday night as they update the city on plans for the path that would connect from Eastern Mennonite University to downtown.
Current plans have the Greenway in the city's five year plan.
Lars Akerson is also an organizer, and he hoped Tuesday night's showing would convince city leaders to move forward with the plans quickly.
"It's also a prototype of what a transportation network that supports diverse modes of transportation can look like in Harrisonburg, and look like at a world class level," said Akerson.
The path would ideal not just for bikers, but for park goers and walkers too.
Benevento said it would make Harrisonburg even more of a community.
"You can meet your neighbors along the way and you can bring children. It's easy and nice. So I love that. And I would love to see that here in Harrisonburg."
The project would cost $1.1 million, and the city would maintain it.
Many supporters are expected at the City Council meeting which starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
