FISHERSVILLE, Va. (WHSV)-- The Valley Career and Technical Center isn't offering your typical high school class. Their unconventional classroom uses Ellie the dog, and Wilbur the horse, among other animals, to ready students for their careers.

"You're actually doing something compared to just learning on the computer," said student Sabrina Shifflett.

The students like it that way.

"I've learned more than I ever thought I ever would know," said student Shyanne Randolph

Sabrina and Shyanne are in the Veterinary Assistant Program at Valley Career and Technical Center. They are part of the first group to go through the two-year program. About to graduate as well, the two agree they are already a step ahead when it comes to their future plans.

"This is a way to allow these students to have a taste of what their options are in the veterinary field, from becoming a veterinary assistant, to becoming a licensed veterinary technician, to becoming a veterinarian or other options that we have out there," said teacher Angela Flick.

"At the beginning, I didn't know what I wanted to do. Thanks to this class, it's helped me to improve and to actually realize that I want to help animals," said Randolph.

"You've got to have a passion for it, and it's just not to like animals or anything. You're going to have to help them, even though they're crying and they want to be let go. It's for their best benefit. That has to be your mindset," said Shifflett.

The goal is for students to eventually put the skills they've gained from the veterinary class to practice; if they go on to vet school, or even open a business of their own. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
