Town Demolishes Schoolhouse

LURAY, Va. (WHSV) -- Some mixed emotions in the town of Luray today as part of the old Luray schoolhouse on Court Street was demolished.

A pile of rubble is all that's left of the oldest part of the schoolhouse.

The building was built in the early 1900s and was considered unsafe and would have cost too much money to renovate.

A parking lot for the new Page County administrative building will take the place of the schoolhouse.

Brenda Gochenour, a Luray resident, will miss the downtown building.

"You know, it's just sad. Anytime history is taken away or destroyed or whatever, it's sad for the people of the community and the community," said Gochenour.

The remaining part of the old schoolhouse is scheduled to be torn down on Monday.
