U.S. Patent Office Takes Redskins Trademark Off the Table

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va (WHSV)-- After the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled six federal trademark registrations owned by the Washington NFL franchise, the pressure continues to rise for the Redskins to change their name.

The two to one ruling was made on the basis that the term "Redskins" is disparaging to Native Americans.

The decision doesn't force the team to stop using the name, but it makes it harder to protect the name and logo on merchandise such as shirts and hats.

The team plans to appeal the ruling...which could take years.

Meanwhile, opponents of the name say this is a great decision.

"And so as i understand the law, the presiding officer -- if the presiding officer wants to use the name redskins to sell some shirts, you can do that. there is no trademark anymore for the redskins.daniel snyder may be the last person in the world to realize this, but it's just a matter of time until he is forced to do the right thing and change the name."

This ruling means that the redskins could lose money from royalties now that the U.S. Patent Office has canceled their trademark.

Many of our local redskins fans wanted the chance to weigh in on this decision. The reactions I received differs from viewers asking why this is even an issue to many who were passionate about the Redskins losing their trademark logo.

One of our viewers at a local restaurant thinks that although the Redskins do not want to change the name anyhow, it is still the time to move forward so they can save their team financially.

"I think it;'s not gonna be good for the Redskins. Clearly they're gonna lose a lot of money. It's a little sad that people have taken it that far to push them to change their name. Although of course they don't wanna change their name, I think they're kind of being forced since their
patent has been changed. they're gonna lose money so they're gonna have to change the entire name if you get rid of the head, you're gonna have to get rid of Redskins," said Sabrina Mayes, a waitress at Hank's Smokehouse.
