RICHMOND, Va. -- The Virginia Department of Transportation takes care of bridges in the state and is explaining routine inspections.

VDOT Chief Engineer Garrett Moore said that bridges must be inspected at a minimum of every two years by federal standards.

Often, Moore said they inspect bridges in the Commonwealth more regularly.

Depending on the state of the bridge, they can come as often as every six months.

With more transportation funding from Governor Bob McDonnell, there is emphasis on infrastructure in Virginia.

Less than 8 % of bridges are considered structurally deficient in Virginia.

It should be noted that that indicator simply means that there is wear and tear that needs to be inspected.

Moore said it doesn't mean that the group of bridges is unsafe.

Moore said with Governor McDonnell's transportation bill, there will be an expected increase of more than $100,000,000 a year that will go directly toward bridge maintenance.

If you're wondering about safety after what happened in Washington, here's Moore's advice.

"I would say don't worry.. oftentimes there [are] people that don't like heights or don't like going over what we do is we watch these things continuously we, we are continuously maintaining them and inspecting them and it's something we take great care with," said Moore.

If they inspect a bridge and it gets a zero to one ranking, VDOT workers will close it.

Moore said out of 21 thousand bridges and culverts, that doesn't happen very often.

Locally, James Davis with the Staunton Engineering Department said that they report to VDOT regularly.

Davis said all bridges there are regularly inspected.
