VDOT Plan Aims to Ease Congestion at Bridge Over I-64

FISHERSVILLE --- On Thursday evening, organizers with the Virginia Department of Transportation are holding a meeting for the public regarding improvements being made to the bridge going over Interstate 64 at exit 91.

Traffic is a common problem on the bridge, especially during rush hour.

Restaurants, hotels, and gas stations at the exit lure in plenty of drivers from the highway and the close proximity to Augusta Health makes the area highly congested.

Traffic can be a nightmare for drivers on a daily occurrence, and some even say they have to wait through multiple traffic light signals just to get over the bridge.

To help ease the traffic problems, VDOT plans to start construction on a project this summer.

According to their reports, the project will double the amount of lanes on the bridge from two to four, and add new turn-lanes.

Dual turn-lanes and receiving lanes will also be added to both on-ramps for I-64.

Project organizers say most of the work will take place during off-set hours, and they do not expect drivers to have to use major detours or for the bridge to have to be shut down.

Drivers, some of whom work their schedule around the traffic, were glad to hear something was being done.

"If you know that the hospital is coming on-duty at seven o'clock, you either get there before or about at 7:30 to avoid the traffic," said Suzanne Meeks, who lives in Fishersville. "It is so congested early in the morning and in the afternoon."

"I try to leave work by four o'clock or go a whole different direction if I have to," explained Chris Daniel, who also lives in Fishersville.

The informational meeting for the public hosted by VDOT will be held Thursday from 4-6pm at the Yancey Volunteer Fire Department building in Fishersville.
