Harrisonburg, Va. (WHSV) In previous years, safe rides were provided for free to people in our area. But in recent years, taxi cabs said they have stopped receiving sponsorship. Now people will have to foot the bill.

When cab driver Kimberly Goodman hears New year's eve, her mind goes to "partying, I think of partying," said Goodman, who works for Yellow Cab Harrisonburg.

She has seen it all.

"I see just people flopping around, flopping around, losing their money, losing their cell phones," said Goodman.
Goodman said several weekends she has had to pick up passengers who were caught drinking and driving.

She's hoping this New Year's Eve drivers will smarten up.

"It makes me feel a lot safer if you call us, because if I'm out on this road, I've got two kids to go home to," said Goodman.

Even though rides are not free this New Year's Eve, they are relatively inexpensive in comparison to a DUI.

"There's a conviction for your first DUI, it's loss of license for a year and pretty substantial fine," said 1st Sgt. Frank Pyanoe with Virginia State Police.

First sergeant Frank Pyanoe said this New Year's Eve Virginia State Police have increased the amount of officers on the roadways.

Looking for suspicious activity, like "signs of drunk driving, such as weaving, driving without headlights or stopping at green lights," said Sgt. Pyanoe.

It's all apart of the Virginia State Police's checkpoint strike force campaign.

"Take a cab people. It saves lives, it saves money. You don't want to be getting pulled over," said Goodman.
