RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Virginia Historical Society is being recognized for its slave name database.
The group says it was recently given an award at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference meeting in Richmond for "Unknown No Longer: A Database of Virginia Slave Names."
The historical society launched the database in September 2011 with more than 1,500 names of enslaved blacks gathered from manuscripts in its collection.
The free online resource now includes more than 10,000 names and more than 1,400 images of documents from which the information was extracted. It was funded by a $100,000 grant from Dominion Resources Inc.
Officials say the C. Herbert Finch Online Publication Award from the volunteer, regional consortium of archivists honors online publications devoted to the promotion and use of archival materials.
