ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. -- A fire happened early Tuesday morning on the 10,000 block of North Valley Pike, burning down a chicken house. The chicken house was one of four on the farm and the only one damaged.

The owners did have insurance so the building damage is covered under their policy. Still the building is completely burned down because of an electrical fire.

The fire started around 3 a.m. The flames were extinguished about an hour after the fire started, but smoke was still visible Tuesday afternoon.

The only other damage was to the neighboring chicken house, where the screen melted off a little.

Each chicken house normally holds about 25,000 chickens, so workers on the farm definitely had something for which to be thankful.

"One good thing is the chicken house was empty. The chickens were supposed to come this morning at 9 a.m., and the house burned down at 3 a.m., so it was pretty good timing," said Timmy Landes, who works on the farm.

The chicken delivery was just rerouted to a different farm expecting their shipment tomorrow. No cattle or any other animals were harmed in the fire.

The owner of the farm did say that the alarm system that notifies them if anything goes wrong was located in that house. A technician will come out next week to fix that.
