People in nearly 200 countries got together today to fight global climate change. The movement is called the "Global Work Party" and some Harrisonburg residents joined in.
"To be a part of that movement around the world is really exciting," says Tom Benevento, the Sustainable Initiatives Coordinator for the New Community Project.
Their goal is to reduce the carbon footprint through different green initiatives, like the portable green house they constructed Sunday.
"It's important to do anywhere, really, because the more we can grow things locally and extend our growing season, of course, we'll be able to lessen the distance that food travels to get to our plates," says Benevento.
The greenhouse cost about $100 to build and will grow enough vegetables to feed a small family. The group hopes others in the community will see the benefit and build their own.
"The global warming issue is so difficult and it's so hard to change our ways," says Sally Meyer, a volunteer. "It's every tiny little step...to be able to do that, makes a difference."
"It's a real treat," adds Benevento. "You know, when everything is cold and brown and snowy outside. You walk into your greenhouse, and it's green. It's a real nice feeling."
