HARRISONBURG -- The 2013 Virginia governor's race is attracting national attention. The race could see more money from outside states compared to years past.

The Virginia and New Jersey governor's races seem to always attract national attention because they're shortly after the presidential race.
Both parties try to figure out whether the president and certain policies are doing well.

This year could set records for the amount of money each candidate receives, mainly for Republican Candidate Ken Cuccinelli.
Democratic Candidate Terry McAuliffe has been known to raise a large amount of money for certain elections. Virginia has no limits on campaign contributions.

Political Analyst Bob Roberts said both candidates are going to try and disqualify the other. He thinks local issues not national issues will decide who will win the race.

"Can Cuccinelli convince voters that McAuliffe is unqualified to be governor. McAuliffe is gonna say, like Mike Warner, I can create jobs. I've created jobs my whole life. So in a sense, McAuliffe is gonna be Mark Warner and Cuccinelli is trying to be the great administrator so we are gonna see a battle," said Roberts.

Both campaigns were able to comment on how the national attention has affected them.

Terry McAuliffe's campaign said, "Terry is entirely focused on Virginia and how he can make the commonwealth the best place for business. Any national attention the race gets won't change that in any way."

Ken Cuccinelli's campaign said, "Communicating with Virginians is ken's top priority and that will continue to be the case throughout this race."

Roberts thinks Cuccinelli must win the governor's race because he has eyes for the oval office. If he would be able to do that, he would be able to rake in a lot of money from outside supporters.
