If you're traveling on Virginia roadways from Wednesday to Sunday at midnight, you might notice more police.

Virginia State Police wants you to drive safely and obey traffic rules this holiday weekend.

Otherwise, you can get a ticket.

Byron Stevens is taking a break after driving around the state all day.

"We probably have been 500 miles today. A lot of traveling," Stevens said.

The heavy traffic is one of the reasons the Virginia state police is stepping up its enforcement during the holiday weekend.

VSP is trying to stop speeders, drunk drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

"They gotta be out there's a lot of speeders when I come down the road. A lot of them driving pretty fast. Passing me and I was driving pretty fast too," Steven said.

VSP hopes to reduce crashes, injuries and deaths on the roads.

Eve Rogers said during the holidays more people are in a rush to get to their families.

"I think it's scary for me as a driver because I don't like getting speeding tickets. But I also think is more comforting for me as a driver because I know there is less of a chance of people being stupid out on the road," Rogers said.

She said people may be more cautious because they know there is a bigger police presence.

Stevens said he's glad they're taking care of dangerous drivers.

"You gotta get them off the road. I'm going to Mama's for thanksgiving and I wanna get there safe," Stevens said.

Harrisonburg Police is also increasing the number of officers out in patrol and some of them are sent to specific areas in the city to keep them safe during the holidays.
