AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va -- On Wednesday a WHSV reporter caught up with a group of volunteers doing something a little different for Thanksgiving at an Interstate 81 rest stop.

Volunteer Bernie Dilgert is part of a 10 person team driving 12 hours from North Carolina to New Jersey to help Hurricane Sandy victims. The team will get to New Jersey just in time for Thanksgiving.

“We're trying to help the people in need, either by feeding, or helping them rebuild their houses or just helping them recover after the storm came through,” said Bernie.

Jan Dilgert, another volunteer, said Sandy helped her realize she is thankful to be able to help those in need.

“I guess it just made me grateful for everything that I have and realizing how blessed we are to not be in that situation,” said Jan.

Nicholaus Stoehrer, a volunteer, realized the same thing.

“It's Thanksgiving, they don't really have anybody,” said Stoehrer, “They lost all of their stuff, so we're going to go and help them out.”

Bernie and his team have the tools to help victims and they hope that spending the holiday in this way, will help them focus on others.

“Normally, Thanksgiving is all about what you can consume for yourself,” said Bernie. “It's actually nice to give back a little bit and show people that there are people that care about them and are here to help.”

Jan and Nicholaus volunteered their time off school to drive and help. They hope they will make a difference helping others on Thanksgiving.

“Hopefully we give people in New Jersey something to be thankful for,” said Jan.

This group will join other ministries heading up north to help out Hurricane Sandy victims. The volunteers hope to get to New Jersey late on Wednesday night.
