MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- This year's Eastern Panhandle Big Tree contest is looking for the biggest hickory tree in the panhandle. Previous contest winners were sycamore, oak, maple, pine and tulip poplar trees.

The deadline to enter this year's contest in July 11. The person who nominates the winner will receive $500 and a copy of Joyce Kilmer's poem, "Trees". The winner can opt to donate the prize money to a charity.

Berkeley County Delegate John Overington is the contest's sponsor. He tells media outlets that the purpose is to call attention to trees, identify species and recognize their importance to the environment.
