Employees at Massanutten resort planned to open for the ski season on Saturday.
But the warm temperatures made them keep the gates closed.
"When it's 70 degrees not many people are thinking about skiing."
That's why he said the slopes at Massanutten Resort are closed.
Sports and Risk Management Director Kenny Hess said the season usually kicks off early December.
In 2011, they opened around Dec. 13, according to Hess.
"Last year was a challenge for us too. We hope this year is better."
He said they usually make snow with these machines, if there's no real snow.
But Hess said it has to be cold enough for it to stick.
As soon as we can make enough snow to comfortably be open for more than a day
With only fake snow on the ground. People visiting Massanutten Resort said going to the skating rink is the best next thing.
Russel Yowell is watching his kids at the skating rink.
"It's ice. It's close to snow," Yowell said.
"We had to get into the Christmas spirit. It was too warm. We were thinking about the beach with this weather so coming up here, trying to get into it here," Yowell said.
For him, this time of the year is meant for snow.
"I remember as a child the ground was frozen in November and thawed in April and now it's super warm," Yowell said.
He says they didn't have many choices for cold weather activities.
So by doing this , his family has the best of both worlds.
"Being outdoor with the weather it's just nice," he said.
The best thing for Hess would be to get colder temperatures.
"As long as it turns around the next week or so...we'll be happy, we'll be fine," Hess said.
