Waynesboro Public Schools Review Safety Plan

Waynesboro Public Schools staff members proposed some changes to their crisis plan at a school board meeting on Tuesday.

The student services coordinator and the school resource officer do this twice a year.

School Resource Officer Jamie Dunn said it helps them be prepared.

"Just to review your procedures just to make sure you are up to speed on, things that you need to do in the event you have to use them, " Dunn said. "So you're familiar with what you need to do, who you need to call, who you need to call. Where you need to be.

After the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, staff members want to make sure everything is up to date.

Staff members proposed for the board to have two staging areas at all schools, in case of an evacuation.

One of the areas would be designated for parents and the other would be for students.

School staff would bring the students to their parents afterwards.

"It kind of helps us to manage the situation better instead of trying to manage a situation at one place, being able to split those areas up," Dunn said.

Right now, Waynesboro schools have random drills to prepare students for every scenario. Each school is evaluated on how well they responded.

For Waynesboro High School's principal Tim Teachy, there are still some safety concerns on a day to day basis.

"I think we do the best that we can, there are a lot of constraints. Waynesboro High School has 27 exits to our building," Teachy said.

Teachy said only two of those exits are unlocked and they lead to the main office.

The school has security cameras but he said he wouldn't mind having people buzz in.

"There's not an armed guard. If someone wanted to come into that door and get down the hall, they could. Would we know that they were in the building, yes we would. But we couldn't stop somebody from getting down the hall," Teachy said.
