Students at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro received a hands-on science lesson on Saturday.

College students from James Madison University's chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma, the Professional Chemistry Fraternity, set up fun and interactive chemistry experiments for the students in the school's cafeteria.

Organizers say, in addition to teaching hands-on chemistry, the event also was designed to debunk some myths about science.

"It's fun that I'm a girl and so then girls can see that you can be scientists and we have half girls here, so that girls can be scientists as well as boys, and just see that science can be fun and it's not just something nerdy or something really boring," explains Alexa DeLuca, a member of Alpha Chi Sigma.

Students also got to experience a chemistry magic show that included making toothpaste, the creation of different colored flames and a demonstration of liquid nitrogen.

The event was also part of JMU's "Big Event," a Saturday community service event.
