WASHINGTON Workers have continued cleaning residue from green paint that was splattered on the Lincoln Memorial in an apparent case of vandalism.

Cleaners returned to the memorial Saturday as the memorial was open to visitors. A National Park Service spokeswoman says they are working cautiously to prevent any damage.

Meanwhile, a Virginia woman says she discovered the vandalism and reported it to U.S. Park Police about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Jamie McDaniel of Stafford, Va., tells The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/15nVDkE ) she was showing a friend the memorial and went late to avoid the crowds. McDaniel says about 20 people were visiting the memorial at that hour.

McDaniel says she was stunned to see green and white paint splattered on the Lincoln statue. She then found two Mountain Dew bottles overflowing with paint.
