Gang activity in the Waynesboro area has been low in recent months, but that doesn't mean the problem has disappeared. Sergeant Kelly Walker says it's a continuing problem in the city.
"There’s an underlying current of gang activity that’s continuing to erode away at our youth and we need to be proactive-the office on youth has taken a very active role."
The office on youth has taken a proactive role by hosting a community rally in which an ex gang member spoke to kids. The group also hopes to raise awareness throughout the community.
"We're going around giving a lot of talks of course-the community rally, the PSAs just to inform the citizens more of the presence of gangs and how our kids need us."
Blair says besides educating kids, finding out the underlying reasons for why they get involved in gangs is key.
"What is it that causes a kid to join a gang or to commit a crime, or to engage in other risky behavior? We just feel like a lot of those reasons are family breakdown, the kids don't feel connected to their family."
