The shelves are full of pet food at pets n' pals pet store in Staunton, but many people, like Sue Rosenthal, are bypassing the pet food and creating their own concoctions.

"I make chicken soup when they don't feel good an I put garlic in it and carrots and celery and cook it down; they love it," Rosenthal says.

Rosenthal cooks for her pets once in a while, but after the recent recall, she says you can't be too sure about what you buy.

Vets like Dr. Lisa Miller say homemade remedies can be used, but sparingly.

"Short term your probably okay, if we're talking about one to two weeks of feeding it till this blows over, hopefully; but long term; its hard to recommend because it’s just hard to have a quality balanced diet over time."

Miller says pets should be given grains, like bread and pasta, mixed with vegetables. Pets need a balanced diet, just like us.

"Homemade food can be nutritious and balanced you do have to make sure you’re using using a qualified recipe made by a veterinary nutritionist to make sure your getting enough vitamins and minerals in the dog."

the yeast in bread will dry your animals skin out. I would not advise you to feed your pet bread. But rice is good for their coat.

Since when are cats and dogs grain eaters?? According to science they are carnivores!! I would never trust the advise of a vet who says to give them grains, pasta and vegetables. It's ridiculous and someone needs to go back to school!
