At Merck, all aspects of their business are conducted in an environmentally sound manner.
To ensure the safety of its employees and protection of the environment and surrounding community, Merck has developed and implemented several very comprehensive programs. This focus begins in the upfront design of equipment and facilities, is present in all its procedures and is an integral part of every employee’s training program. Extensive monitoring programs of the air, water and land demonstrate that the plant is not only in compliance to all regulatory requirements but that it is not impacting human health or the environment. The Plant has its own State of the Art system to safely treat all its waste water and an entire factory dedicated to recovering materials for reuse in plant operations. The site’s energy reduction team has saved millions of dollars of energy earning them multiple national awards. Merck has also received recognition for excelling in environmental leadership for their involvement in Project XL... an effort in which Merck voluntarily switched their steam producing plant from coal to cleaner burning natural gas. |

Merck continues its effort by helping local sections of the Shenandoah River stay clean. The creation of Riverside Park and an environmental garden at Elkton Elementary School are examples of Merck’s commitment to the environment and community. Merck and Company is taking initiative to protect and provide for the environment in which we live, by going above and beyond what’s expected. |
