$10M Software Grant to Help Train WVU Geologists

A division of Halliburton has donated $10.2 million worth of software to West Virginia University's Department of Geology and Geography to help with its energy research and teaching mission.

Vice President for Research Curt Peterson says the grant is from
Landmark Software & Services, a leading supplier of software to the
oil and gas industry.

He says it will help the university train geologists and geophysicists for the jobs that await them upon graduation.

Professor Tom Wilson says the software is critical to the department's energy work.

It's worth $40 million retail, and Wilson says it would be impossible for industry to keep up with the changes without industry support.

The gift through the WVU Foundation follows a previous in-kind gift of nearly $12 million worth of software last year.
