A committee wants a memorial for enslaved laborers who helped build the University of Virginia. The committee met Wednesday at Clark Hall on grounds. During the meeting, committee members discussed placing a sculpture on grounds instead of a plaque, to honor the slaves.
"This is something that we feel will help us as a community claim that dark but instructive and necessary part of our history," said student Anna Funtelar.
The committee says they have a lot of work to do. In order to commission a piece and have it on Grounds, they must go through a process to fit the historical aspect of the university. The committee says they are at the beginning stages of the process.
