The cost for cadets attending Virginia Military Institute will increase more than five percent next year.
VMI's Board of Visitors on Saturday approved an increase in tuition and fees from $16,156 to $17,000 for in-state students, an increase of more than five percent. The increase for out-of-state cadets will be nearly six percent, from $32,000 to $33,898.
Cadets are required to live in campus barracks, so room and board is a required fee. They also must pay a fee to cover costs for uniforms and military-related activities.
A school spokesman said Monday the increase is needed as VMI redesigns its core curriculum to place a greater emphasis on science and leadership training.
