Virginia Tech's in-state undergraduates will pay nearly 11 percent more for tuition and fees for the 2008-2009 school year.

The school's board of visitors voted Monday to raise tuition and mandatory fees from $7,397 to $8,198 a year for Virginia residents. Out-of-state undergraduates will see their tuition and fees increase slightly more than five percent, from $19,775 to $20,825.

Total annual costs will increase about 9 percent, to $13,674, for Virginia residents living in campus housing. Out-of-state undergraduates who live on campus will see their total bill increase by 6 percent, to $26,301.

University officials said the increase will go toward funding faculty additions, campus-safety measures, rising energy costs and a $1.8 million increase in need-based financial aid.
