Students of Staunton City School Districts will need an extra quarter in their pockets this coming school semester.
Rising food and fuel prices are forcing schools across the nation to raise the price of their meals. Experts say the average price of a school lunch is a $1.90.
Last year in Staunton, lunch was $1.75 for elementary schools. The school board says the price will rise to $2 this fall.
Members of the board fear the increase will lower participation.
Head of Finance, Charles Phibbs, says, "I think it will have an impact. Studies have shown in the past that an increase in school lunch prices results in a little bit lower participation."
The price of lunch for middle school students will rise to $2.20 while high school students will now pay $2.25.
