Two West Virginians are among 100 college presidents supporting a national debate over the idea of lowering the legal drinking age from 21 to 18.

Bethany College President Scott Miller has signed onto the Amethyst Initiative, along with President G.T. Smith of Davis & Elkins College.

Larger schools like Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State are on board, too. They argue that current laws encourage secretive binge drinking.

Miller issued a statement Monday saying a person old enough to vote and serve in the military should be informed enough to make mature decisions about alcohol consumption.

The group's name stems from the belief in ancient Greece that the purple gemstone amethyst could ward off drunkenness if used in drinking vessels and jewelry.

Are you kidding me?? This is the stupidest thing I have heard yet!! What moron thinks its a good idea to lower the drinking age to 18?? How many responsible 18 year olds do you really know? Probably NONE!! At 18 everybody THINKS they are 10 feet tall and bullet proof. With that kind of attitude think about how many KIDS will have "a few" and get behind the wheel of a car. Being "buzzed" is just as dangerous as being drunk. If the legal drinking age is lowered I can almost guarantee that DUI's and accident involving alcohol will jump immensely. I will be 28 soon and I know ten years ago I was not mature enough to know my limits on alcohol. Lowering the drinking age will not help control underage drinking it will just encourage younger kids to drink.
