Many West Virginia schoolchildren aren't getting the required amount of physical education time.
Numbers provided to the state Board of Education this week show more than 150 elementary schools, or 67 percent, didn't provide the required 90 minutes of phys ed each week last year. The requirement is part of the Healthy West Virginia Act of 2005.
That's down from 70 percent the previous school year.
Board member Ron Spencer of Doddridge County says there's no excuse for anything under 100 percent. He says more time in the gym could help stem West Virginia's high obesity rates.
Administrators at the schools that failed to meet the requirement say they don't have the staff or adequate facilities.
