The Cedarwood dormitory is the first "Green" building on Eastern Mennonite University's campus, and it's currently full of students.
It houses a solar-powered water heater, saving about 50-percent of the building's natural gas use. The carpet is made from recycled material. All the rooms have automatic light switches and temperature controls.
The students appreciate the university's efforts to go green.
"Yeah, I think it's good, especially with how the environment is these days. EMU is trying to make a difference," says student Olivia Nussbaum.
"I think it's cool. EMU has always tried to cut down on costs," says Sanjay Dick.
"I'm very pleased with that. As a environmentally conscious person myself, it makes me kind of proud I guess," says Phillip Martin.
The dormitory is co-ed and houses every level of student, from freshman to senior. The first day of classes is Wednesday.
