A union representing school workers is suing the Monongalia County Board of Education over its handling of the credentials of privately owned bus companies.

The West Virginia School Service Personnel Association says the board isn't properly verifying that private bus companies meet the same standards as regular school bus drivers.

Private bus companies are usually hired to take students on out-of-state trips or to competitions, but sometimes bring sports teams to other schools for games.

Executive Director Bob Brown says the union filed the lawsuit after a Freedom of Information request produced no paperwork relating to certification, driver background checks or insurance.

Monongalia County Superintendent of Schools Frank Devono says the school system ensures companies meet with state requirements before hiring them.
