Wintry weather is closing schools, or causing them to delay opening, and with a major snow storm expected Friday, local colleges and universities are faced with a similar decision.

Several students at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton say a big concern after a snow storm is a giant hill that slopes up towards one of the dining halls. Students say it's often icy and dangerous if they live below the hill.

Brent Douglas, the school's Director of Facilities Management, says they take this into consideration when deciding whether to delay or cancel classes for the day.

He says, "The hills on this campus and all the stairwells and steps and sidewalks make it really challenging for snow removal, and obviously that's a serious consideration when we evaluate the safety of our students being able to get from place to place."

MBC has announced it will be closed Friday because of the weather. That's the first time this year the school has closed.

It did delay opening Wednesday, also for the first time this winter.
