Both middle school athletic programs and field trips are on the budget chopping block as the Waynesboro School Board deals with a $2-million shortfall. So far, only one will be funded.

The school board says athletic programs are vital to a well rounded education for students, so they are looking for alternate funding. Cutting down on travel costs and increasing admission prices to games are just a couple of the board's considerations.

On the other hand, the school board decided field trips will no longer receive funding from Waynesboro Schools Central Office. Board member Kathe Maneval says that does not necessarily mean an end to all field trips.

"Each elementary school, middle school, high school has discretionary funds available to them that they can decide how best they want to use those funds and sometimes they choose to use them for field trips or to offset the costs," says Maneval.
