School Superintendents Speak Out on Education Funding

School superintendents across Virginia are speaking out at some of Governor Bob McDonnell's education initiatives.

The Virginia Association of School Superintendents held a press conference outlining some of their concerns on Tuesday in Richmond.

One of their big concerns is with the Governor's plan to pump an additional $2.2 billion into the Virginia Retirement System.

That plan would require half of the money to be paid on the local level.

In Harrisonburg, that would equate to about $2.2 million that Superintendent Dr. Scott Kizner says currently goes towards things like remedial courses, textbooks and special education.

Dr. Kizner says he's also frustrated by some unfunded mandates currently being considered by the General Assembly.

One of those proposals would require daily physical education classes but would not provide additional funding.

Dr. Kizner says its particularly frustrating to see unfunded mandates being considered just days after Governor McDonnell held a press conference talking about repealing or suspending unfunded mandates.

"One day the governor talks about unfunded mandates and then the next thing we know we see bills again going through the General Assembly such as physical education being mandated which is going to require us to pay for additional PE teachers."

Harrisonburg and Rockingham County schools are also dealing with upcoming additional losses in funding to the tune of a half-million dollars thanks to changes in the Consumer Price Index.
