Thousands in Funds Missing From Va High School

An audit has found at least $16,400 missing from student-raised funds at Robert E. Lee High School over a 12-month period.

School officials released the findings Wednesday.

The News Leader reports school officials found out about the losses only after a new bookkeeper took over.

Police arrested former bookkeeper Lisa Michelle Harrison in
August on two counts of embezzlement.

She committed suicide five days later.

The school system's audit found a lack of internal controls at the high school.

The funds were lost through unauthorized debit card use, gate receipts from athletic events that were never deposited, gifts and advances to employees and use of a Kroger credit card.

Staunton School Superintendent Steven Nichols says he'll make
recommendations to the school board on personnel actions related to the report.
