A lot of that pride was shown in Elkton Sunday as people gathered at the town's 9/11 memorial. Elkton's memorial however represents more than just those who died that day.

The steel beams stand tall, representing the twin towers. They're adorned with an I-beam from ground zero. They stand in a flower garden in the shape of the Pentagon. Clearly this is a 9/11 memorial.

Many people saw it for the first time in a solemn ceremony in Elkton's memorial park. It was a day for veterans, families, and our first responders to reflect on the events of September 11, 2001.

We all watched in horror as the twin towers crumbled. In the following days, first responders from around the country ran in to save as many lives as they could. Among them, Harrisonburg PD canine officer Chris Showalter. He and his partner searched through the rubble for any signs of life.

Organizer Rick Workman says this memorial is for people like him saying, "I'm a retired soldier. We have monuments all over the country, all over the world. We have holidays, these first responders, they get a pat on the back every now and then, but nothing else."

This special group of heroes is getting honored right along side another set of heroes. Those who served in WWII. So from now on, Stonewall Memorial Park is not just a place to reflect on those who serve in times of war, but also those who serve every day here at home.
